What usually needs fixing in an old sauna

  • Heater. Elements burn out and stones crumble. A heater that is old, under-sized or slow to reach temperature is the most common reason a sauna feels weak.
  • Controller and wiring. Old analogue controls, tripping breakers or scorched connections need an electrician and often a new controller.
  • Benches and backrests. Dark, cracked or splintered bench timber is cheap to replace compared with the cabin itself.
  • Wall and ceiling lining. Warped, cracked or stained boards, or mould behind them, usually mean damp insulation as well.
  • Door and glass. A door that no longer seals lets heat out and makes the heater work harder.
  • Lighting. Old fittings that are not rated for sauna heat should be replaced with sauna-rated LED.

What drives renovation cost

  • How many parts fail at once. One part is a repair; heater, controller, benches and lining together is a rebuild.
  • Hidden damage. Damp insulation or rot is only found once the lining comes off.
  • Electrical work. A larger heater may need a dedicated circuit or three-phase power.
  • Access. Built-in rooms in villas and gyms take more labour than freestanding cabins.

Renovate or replace? A simple rule

Renovate when the structure is sound: dry insulation, straight walls, a door that seals. Swapping the heater or controller, re-doing benches or adding upgrades is good value.

Replace when the cabin itself is the problem, or when the repair list covers the heater, controller, benches and lining at once. At that point a renovation quote often approaches the price of a new sauna, without the new sauna’s warranty, insulation and efficiency.

How much does it cost to renovate a sauna in Dubai?

It depends on what has failed. Cosmetic work and single-part fixes cost a small fraction of a new sauna; replacing the heater, controller, benches and lining together can approach the price of a new cabin. A new Thermahack sauna starts from AED 18,000 + VAT installed, so that is the number to compare a big renovation quote against.

Is it better to renovate or replace an old sauna?

Renovate if the walls, insulation and door are sound and only parts or finishes are tired. Replace if the timber is warped, cracked or mouldy, the insulation is damp, or the heater, controller and wiring all need work at the same time.

Can I add a salt wall or red light to my sauna?

Yes, as an upgrade: a Himalayan salt wall is AED 3,900 per m², a star-light ceiling AED 1,200 per m² and sauna-rated red light therapy AED 4,200 per unit, + VAT. Red light is for infrared and hybrid cabins only.

Can I convert an old sauna to infrared?

Sometimes, but an infrared sauna needs panels sized and placed for the cabin and a suitable controller, so in a small old cabin a new infrared sauna is often the simpler and better-value option.

How long does replacing a sauna take?

About four weeks to build a new Thermahack sauna in our UAE workshop, then removal of the old cabin and installation of the new one, usually in one visit.

Your first step costs nothing.
